Commission an Abstract Painting

Every painting I create begins with a conversation.

Not about colors.

Not about matching a sofa.

Not about recreating another painting.

It begins by understanding how you want a space to feel.

If you'd like to explore the paintings currently available before deciding whether a commission is the right path, I invite you to begin with The Work. Sometimes the painting you're looking for already exists. When it doesn't, a commission offers us the opportunity to create something that has never existed before and never will again.

I've never thought of commissions as custom orders.

To me, they're creative collaborations built on trust.

We begin by talking about your home, your architecture, the way natural light moves through the space, and the atmosphere you'd like the finished painting to create. Those conversations provide a foundation, but they never become a blueprint. I don't work from formulas because I believe the strongest paintings emerge through curiosity rather than certainty.

That's true whether I'm creating a painting for my own studio or for someone else's home.

Every canvas begins without knowing exactly where it will end.

That's part of the excitement.

It's also part of the responsibility.

When someone commissions a painting, they're placing an extraordinary amount of trust in me.

I never take that lightly.

The goal has never been to paint what someone expects.

It's to create something they couldn't have imagined before it existed.

That's the difference between reproducing an idea...

...and discovering one together.

How a Commission Begins

Every commission begins exactly the same way.

With a conversation.

Not about dimensions alone.

Not about matching existing furniture.

Not about recreating another painting.

We begin by talking about your home, the architecture surrounding it, the way natural light moves through the space, and how you hope to experience the finished painting every day. Those conversations help me understand the role the painting will eventually play, while leaving enough freedom for discovery to remain part of the process.

I believe that's important.

The painting isn't created for your wall.

It's created for your life.

Some collectors have a very clear vision of the atmosphere they'd like to create.

Others simply know how they want a room to feel without knowing exactly why.

Both are wonderful places to begin.

One of the things I've learned over the years is that the most meaningful commissions rarely begin with certainty.

They begin with curiosity.

If you're here in Austin, Buy Original Art in Austin offers the opportunity to meet, experience the work in person, and talk through your ideas before deciding whether a commission feels like the right direction. Those conversations often answer questions neither of us knew to ask at the beginning.

Once we decide to move forward, I don't create preliminary paintings for approval or work from rigid formulas. Instead, I allow the work to evolve through the same intuitive process that guides every painting I create. That freedom isn't uncertainty.

It's where originality lives.

Every commissioned painting deserves the opportunity to become something neither of us could have predicted on the first day we met.

That's exactly what makes the finished work one of a kind.

Trusting the Process

Trust is the foundation of every successful commission.

Not because I expect blind confidence.

Because the strongest paintings emerge when there's room for discovery.

Throughout the process, I'll keep you informed, answer your questions honestly, and make sure you understand how the painting is developing. My goal isn't simply to deliver a finished artwork.

It's to create a painting you'll continue discovering for years after it arrives in your home.

Before We Begin

How long does a commissioned painting take?

Every painting develops at its own pace.

Some evolve quickly. Others ask for more time, more revision, and more patience before they reveal themselves. Rather than promising an exact timeline, I prefer to allow each painting the time it needs to become complete. I'd rather deliver the right painting than simply deliver one on schedule.

Will I receive updates during the process?

Yes.

Although I don't work from predetermined designs, I believe communication is an important part of every commission. I'll keep you informed throughout the process, answer your questions honestly, and make sure you always understand where the painting is in its journey.

Can commissioned paintings be shipped?

Absolutely.

Whether you live in Austin or across the country, every commissioned painting is professionally prepared for safe delivery. My goal is for the experience of receiving the work to feel every bit as thoughtful as the process of creating it.

The Next Step

Commissioning a painting isn't about ordering something that already exists.

It's about creating the opportunity for something entirely new to come into the world.

If that idea resonates with you, I'd encourage you to spend a little time with The Work before we begin our conversation.

The paintings already there will tell you far more about how I think than I ever could.

If, after spending time with them, you still feel there's a painting waiting to be discovered...

I'd be honored to create it with you.
